Filtration

For all ornamental ponds a biological filter is a must to help maintain clean water and to control algae. A biological filter provides a surface area for beneficial bacteria to live upon that break down the nutrients that accumulate in a pond from fish and aquatic life. An excess amount of nutrients in a pond promotes the growth of various types of algae, including green water algae and string algae. A good biological filter will come with a particular bio-media such as bio-ball, beads, bio-ribbon or fish floss. The more bio-media that a filter has, the more surface area the bacteria will have to grow on and the cleaner your water will be.

There are many different types of filtration systems on the market and it can be quite confusing as to what type you need for your pond.
