Description
Origin: Flores, Indonesia
Age: Unknown, however likely age is several thousand years
For over 6500 years, societies that follow the megalithic traditions have produced large stone artifacts and/or structures related to ceremonies or funerals. These societies believe that souls of their dead ancestors still live in the world of the spirits. Megaliths not only fulfill sacral needs but also everyday needs such as boundary markers for village lines or rice paddies, stone mortars to grind seeds, etc.
In Indonesia, where these stones were discovered, megaliths are used to maintain closer relationships with the spirit of dead ancestors. Marupu, or worship of the powerful invisible forces, is a prevalent element of the megalithic culture in Indonesia and is an integral part of the daily life of many such societies.
Please note that these are natural stones so the diameters (D) do vary over the length of the stone. The dimensions listed are the approximate average diameter of each stone.
This extraordinary piece has one face that is flat, making it a distinctive bench if placed horizontally. It can be installed vertically as well to make an equally unique statement.
